Judas Priest legend K.K. Downing has traded in life on the road chasing the ideal axe solo to set up a world-class golf retreat in Shropshire.

The Grammy Award-winning rocker has swapped the limelight of the arena stage for a slice of peaceful Shropshire countryside, unveiling plans to build a luxury leisure development on the grounds of his country pile Astbury Hall with the help of property developer Anthony McCourt.

The estate, which comprises 320 acres of land, is home to an 18-hole golf course that has played host to several major international golf competitions, including this year’s EuroPro Golf Tour.

Downing plans to build 45 luxury private retreats, a 63-bedroom five-star hotel, a spa and conference facilities as part of an ambitious £30m expansion.

Anthony McCourt has a background in mixed use developments, including attracting interest from both investors and buyers from the Far East.

Speaking of the Astbury Hall Golf Development, he said: “The Astbury Retreats will create a new benchmark in holiday home luxury. We envisage that the properties will prove to be popular not only with golf aficionados in the UK, but with those who have interests in both sport and property development in Europe and China too.”

Prices start at a rock’n’roll £300,000, so perhaps one for when the next platinum record drops eh?
