A development of luxury Lichfield apartments has beaten off worldwide competition to be awarded one of the most prestigious recognitions of design excellence.

The Malt House, a project between Mar City Homes and local architects Brownhill Hayward Brown, triumphed in the Residential Retrofit Design category at the Society of British and International Design (SBID) Awards.

The development of 25 one, two, three, and four bedroom apartments and duplexes was shortlisted at the ceremony, which saw projects from 30 countries across five continents make the cut across its 15 categories.

Built in 1891, the former home of Wolverhampton and Dudley Breweries – which later became Marston’s – drew on the inspiration from the building’s original features and restored antique pieces such as the steel columns and wooden beams.

Architects Brownhill Hayward Brown were instrumental in gaining consent for the Grade II listed building to be reordered for its new use and were keen to be respectful of the site’s legacy, whilst still meeting the demands of modern living.

Andrew Hayward, director at Brownhill Hayward Brown, said: “The Malt House is a prime example of the industrial architecture from the Victorian era and was home to one of the three surviving malt house kilns in the country, so only a highly sensitive design to respect the industrial archaeology would be accepted.

“We have great experience with conservation projects such as this, where high-quality design can transform a rundown building. The loft apartments were designed to respect the structure of the building and we’ve been respectful to the many original features throughout The Malt House.

“These vary in each apartment, but that is part of the charm of the spaces. To win such a reputable international award, which is focused on the excellence of the design, is a proud moment for us. To go up against the rest of the world and come out on top is the perfect present before Christmas.”

Vanessa Brady OBE, president of SBID, said: “Year after year, we are astonished by the volume of entries and support received. The SBID Awards continue to mark its place as one of the finest celebrations of design excellence, securing its international edge at the forefront of design.”
