Three mechanics from Stafford have managed to shed the combined equivalent of 10 tyres in weight after pledging to get healthy for the new year, and raise money for charity.

Jim Turner, Jon Daly, and Ryan Lee, all of HiQ Stafford, lost a whopping 100lbs in total while raising £1,300 for Breast Cancer Care after making the pledge to lose weight at the turn of last year.

Their customers, who have provided the vast majority of donations, were kept updated with the trio’s progress and fundraising total through a running total in the reception area of the Foregate Street site.

48-year-old Jim, who lost more than 20kg, started his challenge by first walking and then running with his dogs, whilst Ryan, 19, took up cycling to and from work to lose 31lbs. Jon, 26, also ditched his car in order to walk to and from work, losing almost a stone and a half.

Whilst colleagues encouraged them to stick to their objectives, the three friends also attempted to trip each other up in a bid to win the monthly challenges they had set each other as motivation.

Jim said: “Every year we take up a challenge as a centre to raise money for HiQ’s chosen charity. Everybody says they want to lose weight in the New Year, but to have your friends doing it with you is a real bonus and keeps you focused.

“We were supportive, but also competing as we had set ourselves mini competitions. As a group, we cut back on sweet things whilst we were working and gave ourselves fitness and dietary routines which were tough to stick to, but we managed it.

With a new found love for fitness, the group are contemplating this year’s challenge.

He added: “There’s a chance we might set ourselves the target of doing some longer distance runs this year, so we have to decide what that may be. We hope to lose even more weight in the process but we are so proud we managed to raise the money for such an important cause.”

Breast Cancer Care is the chosen charity of fast fit tyre specialists HiQ. The company raised in excess of £100,000 in 2014 across the country. For more information, visit www.hiqonline.co.uk
