A leading prosthetics event returned to the Midlands for its second year running to host its sold-out exhibition last month.
The Prosthetic Event, an educational and shopping event that showcases educators in prosthetics, makeup, special FX and more in film, television and on stage, descended upon Birmingham’s Conference Aston on Saturday 21st November for a one-day extravaganza, with event organisers citing the venue’s academic features and location among the top reasons for selecting it.
It is the second year running that The Prosthetics Event has chosen Conference Aston for its venue, with this year seeing a record-number of prosthetics and special FX fans from around the world attending the specialist event. As well as the 900 attendees, the event also had an array of top sculptors, makeup artists and concept designers speak at the event, including double Oscar award-winner Mark Coulier, who was awarded for his work with Tilda Swinton in The Grand Budapest Hotel and Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady.
Speaking of the venue choice, Laura Hargreaves, event manager at The Prosthetics Event, said: “Conference Aston was fantastic last year. Not only was the venue accommodating and helpful, but its layout and facilities work incredibly well for our event.
“The Prosthetics Event has a real focus on education, we want to teach attendees the skills and techniques needed to excel in this field, and Conference Aston’s lecture theatres are perfectly laid out and equipped to host these educational seminars.
“Location is a key factor when selecting a venue. So many events in the UK tend to be in London, however travel and overnight stay can be incredibly expensive, especially for the students who want to come to our exhibition. Birmingham is a much better choice for us as it’s easily accessible to a large area of the UK, hotels are more reasonably priced and travel is less expensive.”
In addition to locality and resources, the academic venue was also selected for its full venue service. Not only was Conference Aston able to provide The Prosthetics Event with conference areas and an exhibition space for 15 stands, but the venue also provided a cafe that was able to serve delegates food throughout the day, as well as hotel rooms for those wishing to stay overnight.
Paul Bunce, marketing manager at Conference Aston, said: “Hosting The Prosthetics Event is always a lot of fun, especially seeing life-like zombies, aliens and mutants walking amongst our space. When it comes to venue choice, we’ve always seen a consistent trend with event organisers citing our location as being a key factor in selecting us. Not only are we situated in the heart of Birmingham City Centre, a city that is seeing a real rejuvenation at the moment, but we are within walking distance of three national train stations, a two minute drive from the motorway and just a 30 minute drive from Birmingham International Airport, making us ideally located for both national and international visitors.
“We’re also seeing event organisers wanting to offer visitors a space where they can sleep, eat and attend their meetings and exhibitions all in one venue. Our catering facilities and four-star standard hotel provide all of this on site.”
