Birmingham-based contractor Colmore Tang Construction has given an insight into its rapid growth, from the inception of the business two and a half years ago to a contractor delivering projects to the value of £200 million.
In a video by the firm, aimed at developer clients, managing director Andy Robinson explains the company’s alternative approach to construction and how it is more than just a contractor. By setting up a new business, the firm was able to achieve the level of pricing that it felt was right for its first buildings, where other contractors were unable to reach its stringent cost targets. Andy explains how Colmore Tang Construction recruited top people in their fields from across the sector, starting with the right skill set and growing the business through its people.
In the video, Andy says: “Having been a developer for 20 odd years, I don’t really like contractors. Now I’m in the business of contracting, I believe there is a way of dealing with contractors, a different way. We should be collaborative, we should sit down and agree how to work things through together. We shouldn’t get into a position where each party is just looking after themselves.
“We have the ability to talk to a developer and really understand what their business is about and how we can add value.
“The strength of the business is about the people in it, and we have over 250 years of combined experience. What makes us different? We see a project through from the acquisition of a building right through to the sale of the first unit, or completion of a hotel and handing over to the management company. We understand hospitality, residential and commercial buildings.”
Working alongside developer Seven Capital, Colmore Tang Construction is delivering over 3,000 new homes and a 253-bedroom hotel from existing buildings, with four of its key projects across the West Midlands having been topped out on the same day in April 2016. The firm’s growth has resulted in the launch of a new build programme, expanding the firm’s expertise and capabilities to include large new build developments.
