A record-breaking 1,300 people converged on Birmingham's biggest residential conference venue on Saturday 18th November for The Prosthetics Event, which focuses on special effects makeup, prosthetics, body art, mould-making and animatronics.
Hosted at Conference Aston for the fifth year running, the event welcomed Emmy-award winning Christopher Nelson, who recreated the iconic Michael Myers mask for the Hollywood blockbuster Halloween, as he gave guests an insight into his approach to the prosthetics for the 2018 slasher movie.
The line-up also included David Marti and Montse Ribé, directors of Spain's Efectos Especiales DDT, the company behind the award-winning make-up effects in movies such as Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, and Crimson Peak.
“We are very happy to be celebrating the fifth anniversary of The Prosthetics Event at Conference Aston this year,” said Katie Davies, the Prosthetics Event Manager. “The venue has provided us with the perfect space to grow and expand our event over the past five years, with 2018 enabling us to host another diverse and exciting sold-out show.”
The annual event is staged by BAFTA-winning Doctor Who prosthetics designer Neill Gorton, whose company Millennium FX did the prosthetics for Slaughterhouse Rulez, the new horror comedy starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
The day featured a packed schedule of activities, including the Monster Mash exhibition full of original prosthetics; the Body Art Zone, where artists create fantasy works; a main stage, with demos, discussions and seminars; an education stage, where visitors receive professional tips and tricks; plus a Portfolio Surgery for career advice.
Samantha Brown, Head of Conference Aston, said she was delighted to welcome the event for the fifth year in a row.
“We saw more visitors than ever before for this year’s sold-out event” she said. “It gets bigger and better every year and it’s a great event which demonstrates the flexibility and versatility of the larger event spaces here at Conference Aston and how they can work together to host the various lectures, workshops and exhibitions.”
Situated at the heart of Birmingham city centre on the Aston University campus, Conference Aston is one of the UK’s most accessible conference, event and exhibition venues, located just minutes from three mainline train stations, the M6, M5, M42 and Birmingham Airport.
